What’s the secret of the Pop Idol drama Coffee Prince
Rating hovering at the 30% mark, MBC Coffee prince 1st Shop will bid audience goodbye on the 28th.
Coffee Prince is a pop idol drama, its depicts the love and lives of the youth in a very romantic way.
Since the 90s, audiences begins to like pop idol dramas, but of late had received lukewarm responses. Reasons being, the storyline and the characters portrayed does not change, which the audiences are getting tired of, resulting in a drop of ratings. The target audience of Pop Idol drama are of the 20s, 30s, and as their lifestyle changes for the better, they are getting harder to be attracted to the storylines of the dramas.
Even so, Pop Idol drama Coffee Prince 1st Shop had attracted so many Coffee Addicts, and its popularity remains high, why so?
Not trapped within the cliché of Romance drama
Coffee Prince’s main theme is the same as all dramas, typically loved by younger generation.
But Coffee Prince allows Go Eun-Chan (YEH) to cross-dress, which differs from the cliché of other dramas. In a environment that veryone around EC knows the true about her gender and allowing HK (GY) to fall into frustration of a ‘gay’romance, hypes up the audiences about “When the truth of EC gender will be revealed?” and “What will happen when that happens?”
Though Coffee Prince gay theme will make the mood of the drama ‘heavy’ but gave the audience a ‘cool’ impression. Furthermore, the spats between EC and HK are frequent but the durations are not long.
HK is a 3rd Generation heir apparent, EC has to behave like a man for the sake of livelihood. But the contrast of their birth did not contribute too much of an obstacle to their relationship, this is a new attempt so not to allow the theme to fall into the cliché of typical drama. Sensuous lines from Male actors and the assembly of ‘beautiful’ men of the CP becomes the highlight of the drama.
Accentuate the traits of the artistes
Many viewers are looking forward to the idea of YEH cross-dressing as a guy, wondering whether she will able to have a breakthrough with the portrayal. But after the airing, viewers noticed that there’s not much change in their acting. Instead, the artistes need not change their acting due to casting of artistes that is similar to the roles.
”Round faced YEH basically has handsome features, in her past performances gave the impression of being active and modest. This is reasons why YEH is selected for the role. The original writer/scriptwriter Lee Jeong-e, on the role of HK had said: “GY is the most suitable for the role”.
In reality, there is no difference in the the performance of YEH in Coffee Prince and the 2006 MBC Goong. GY portrayal of HK reprised the role that he had in SBS 《饼干老师星星糖》(Biscuit teacher).
But the focus is on the original acting of the artistes which gives the viewers a new ‘feel’. , Coffee Prince 1st shop stand out when comparing to many typical pop idol dramas which concentrate on the numbers of stars appearing and the change of acting by the artistes.
Not depending on star power but the use of artistes similar to the roles makes one think deeper into this simple formula.

coffee prince is one of the best series I ever watched. I hope the cast will still remain friends although they are not working together! I love Gong yoo so much! Oh eun Chan, you are so damn PrETTY!Ehehe!

the funny thing is, the series didn’t rely that much on slapstick comedy for it to be even considered hilarious. The characters themselves are already interesting and those contrasting personalities makes up the essence of what made this show a hit.
Personally, you wouldn’t go wondering and saying to yourself “Who the hell is that?” or “What’s his purpose in the show?” seeing that most characters have diverse personalities with a hint of realistic strides that the actors blended to the audience with ease.

I loved Coffee Prince the first time when the trailer was aires on GMA 7 here in Philippines in 2008, though I’ve watch the mini series a couple of times, it still makes me feel excited everytime i watch it. The story and the characters play so naturally that makes the viewers love them by heart. The love of HK to Eun Chan really gives a big impact to me, because for me its very unconditional that not everybody can offer to their love one, he would rather be a gay just to be with Eun Chan, that’ somewhat very unconditioanl right? and one more thing this tv series makes me laugh and cry at thesame time, that’s why I could’nt wait to see the season 2, of course with thesame cast………………….I hope the cast of Coffee Prince will visit the Philippines.

well, i have watched coffee prince for like a hundred times still i am not over it!!it has a unique sense of humor and nothing like the usual korean drama wherein there is an antagonist who kills or ruin somebody else’ life..i was very very very good!!

Coffee Prince is so awesome, full of delicate memories and it’s very inspiring and warming. All the actors and actress really poured their heart in every scenes of the drama. So unique and entertaining. Very good job especially for YEH, she acted very well, really tomboyish. Some of the scenes make my heart almost burst out!!!

hello! im ybur from philippines am! am one of the big fan of the korean drama which is the coffee prince…i just want to say that i love the story and esp. the two prince… i mean one prince and one princess which are the two lovers of coffee prince….hope that there is another season for that drama…hope eun chan and han kyul could visit our country….

GY and YEH are a perfect couple..
They’re doing great in coffee prince..i love the movie, i love them both..
If there will really be the 2nd session of coffee prince i’m really really hoping that GY or EH will not be replaced..
It will not be the same without them..
for me they’re the soul of the film so it won’t be the same without them..

watching CP is my first time watching Korean drama in my life..i’m getting interested to the drama when i’m watching the 6th episode..Then, i started the drama at the 1st episode..the drama is the best and interesting drama that i haven’t seen before..actually,the drama is quite same what happened to my life before..and because of that i really interested to the drama..until now,i can feel this kind of drama really happening in my life..naturally acting..good luck to COFFEE PRINCE..and Go Eun Chan..

This review is interesting, but this is ridiculous:

I just watched Coffe Prince and Goong back-to-back, and I could hardly tell that Yoon Eun Hey was the same actress. Everything about her portrayal was different, even her voice. She did a great job, especially in Coffee Prince. Anyone know where I can watch My Girl online?
